Ping your sitemaps to the major search engines

Let the major search engines know about updates to your site by pasting the links below in your browser address bar and substituting the address of your sitemap.

Which Search provider gives the WORST support to webmasters ?

Most search providers offer a range of tools to webmasters to use to submit / monitor their inclusion in the engines index. The question is ‘Are these tools any good?’. Do they provide accurate info ? and, when things go wrong, how easy is it to sort out any problems?

Pingbacks as the new link exchange.

Webmasters are constantly looking to exchange links with other websites. Most turn to companies like Link Exchange and use this service to find other like minded webmasters and, of course, this is all in the name of google rankings. With the rise of social networks (in particular blogs) this option may well be replaced by pingbacks.

“A pingback is one of three types of linkbacks, methods for Web authors to request notification when somebody links to one of their documents. This enables authors to keep track of who is linking to, or referring to their articles. Some weblog software, such as Movable Type, Serendipity, WordPress and Telligent Community, support automatic pingbacks where all the links in a published article can be pinged when the article is published.

Essentially, a pingback is an XML-RPC request (not to be confused with an ICMP ping) sent from Site A to Site B, when an author of the blog at Site A writes a post that links to Site B. However, it also requires a hyperlink. When Site B receives the notification signal, it automatically goes back to Site A checking for the existence of a live incoming link. If that link exists, the pingback is recorded successfully. This makes pingbacks less prone to spam than trackbacks.” ~ From Wikipedia

By using a plugin like DISQUS Comment System by to display comments from other sources (Twitter, FriendFeed, Digg, Reddit, Hacker News, Other blogs) you can quicky create lists of relevent links (/comments). And the word ‘relevent’ is important as search engines look for relevency in the pages that you link to. As your articles / blogs are linked to on another page, it is a fair assumption the page is topic similar. You also have the option to moderate these comment links which, although you may still have to wade through the spam, keeps your site spam free.

Add into the mix a plugin like Socialize by Jon Bishop to allow people to quickly propigate your article via twitter, facebook, digg etc. and you have a system to find and exchange links.

The reverse is, of course, also true. If you find a website which posts its pingbacks, rather than post a comment on the site, comment on it on your own site.

Google continues to work to address the threat posed by the real-time search capabilities of services like Twitter and Facebook.

In May, they launched “Search Options” to allow users to refine search results by content type and time (within the past day was the timeliest you could get), but today, they’re launching a “past hour” filter to make its index even fresher.

Along with this key update, Google is rolling out 8 other search options which should be available to everyone at some point today. Those include the ability to search within a specific date range, shopping site filters, a visited pages filter, and an option to see only results from Google’s book, blog, and news search tools.

Google ignores keyword metatags completely – official

Google webmaster blog today –

“Our web search (the well-known search at Google.com that hundreds of millions of people use each day) disregards keyword metatags completely. They simply don’t have any effect in our search ranking at present.” – Google’s Matt Cutts.

Although google hasn’t used or has ignored stated keyword metatags for years that doesn’t mean that they are useless. There are still search engines out there that still utilise them.

Exchange links to improve your search engine ranking

Exchanging links with other relevant / related websites can add to your ranking with search engines like google and Bing. Sites that link to you that have a higher pagerank are, of course, worth more to your site in terms of ranking than those with a low or zero rank.

Do not be tempted to buy links. Search engines can ban your site for this practice.
